The types of truss girder bridges are classified according to the material of the upper structure, including wooden bridges, stone bridges, steel structure bridges, reinforced concrete bridges, and composite bridges composed of reinforced concrete bridge decks and steel beams. Wooden and stone beam bridges are only used for small bridges; Reinforced concrete beam bridges are used for medium and small bridges; Steel beam bridges can be used for large and medium bridges.
Steel structure bridges are generally composed of upper structures, lower structures, supports, and ancillary structures. The upper structure, as the bridge span structure, is the main structure for crossing obstacles. The lower structure includes bridge piers and foundations. But the material utilization of the solid web beam is not economical enough. The members that make up the truss in the truss beam mainly bear axial forces, which can effectively utilize the material strength of the members. However, the construction of the truss beam is complex and it is mostly used for larger span bridges.
